Facebook confirmed that ads about social issues, elections or politics will once again be banned in Georgia starting Wednesday morning, with the two Senate runoff elections in the state wrapping up Tuesday.

The social network imposed an indefinite ban on ads of those types in the U.S., which took effect Oct. 27, or one week before Election Day.

However, following pressure from both sides of the political aisle, Facebook reversed course last Dec. 16 and lifted the ban for authorized advertisers in the state, while maintaining that ads targeting locations outside of Georgia or not relevant to the specific runoff elections would be rejected.

Emily Glazer of The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that advertisers were informed that ads related to the runoff elections would be paused “early” Wednesday, and that new political ads could not be created.

The email from Facebook to advertisers said in part, “This is part of our ongoing efforts to reduce the potential for confusion or abuse,” Glazer reported, adding that the company said it would inform advertisers when it decided to end the ban.
