According to recent research by Spencer Stuart, the average tenure for chief marketing officers at major brands fell to its lowest level in more than a decade in 2020.

The report is based on an analysis of the tenure and demographics of CMOs at 100 of the most advertised U.S. brands in 2020.

The average tenure of the CMO in 2020 was 40 months, the lowest since 2009. The median tenure was 25.5 months.

47% of CMOs in the companies surveyed were women in 2020, up from 43% in 2019 and 36% in 2018. In addition, women made up more than half (52%) of the incoming class of CMOs in 2020.

However, racial / ethnic diversity declined: 13% of CMOs in the companies surveyed were racially or ethnically diverse, compared to 14% in 2019. And only 12% of incoming CMOs in 2020 were racially or ethnically diverse.
